Bringing SA’s darkest subject into the light, one woman at a time.
In South Africa, a woman’s murdered every 3 hours. Every day, we’re bombarded with headlines and statistics, hashtags and marches. Gender-based Violence has become so pervasive, the numbers so numbing, we turn a blind eye, leaving what happens in the dark... in the dark. We used the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence to bring it into the light.
#16DaysOfLight,
one murder scene at a time.
The actual rock used to crush Janika Mellow’s skull.
‘Compassion collapse’ occurs when we’re confronted by suffering on a scale we can’t comprehend, rendering us desensitised, apathetic and more likely to look away. So for 16 Days of Activism we shone a spotlight on individual stories, bringing them to life in a way people couldn’t ignore.
An all-woman crew travelled across South Africa, shining a light on some of the darkest places in our country – the actual locations of murders – and telling the stories that had been left behind.
The actual mattress Clarissa Lindoor was stabbed to death on.
The actual beach where Nwabisa Mthumeni was shot.
The actual shed Joey and Anisha van Niekerk were hung in.
Turning darkness into light, one film at a time.
Each night for 16 nights, we went back to the scenes of brutal femicides and projected moving tributes – written in light – to the woman or girl that lost her life there. Each day, we gave a face and a place to the cold, dark numbers. Each day, we proved that GBV can happen to anyone, anywhere. Each day, we added soul to the statistics and reignited the compassion SA had seemingly lost. And, having put it in the spotlight, we helped South Africans take action, connecting real women, in real danger, with real help that could save their lives.
Saving lives one click and one pledge at a time.
Saving lives one click and one pledge at a time. Viewers were urged to visit an online platform that consolidated women abuse fighting efforts in one place, allowing individual citizens, corporates and NGOs to pledge their support and whatever tangible help they have to offer, and allowing victims of abuse to quickly find the resources they need – from legal advice to safe houses.
A message that hit home. And the headlines.
And from meaningless statistics, came real, meaningful results.
